Team Devon

Team Devon is a partnership of bodies from across the county, including Plymouth and Torbay, who are responding to the opportunities presented by the 2012 Olympics.  Reflecting Team Southwest, there are representatives for each of the five ‘flames’ of business, tourism, sport, culture and community.  Lead bodies include the Devon and Cornwall Business Council, Devon Destination Ltd., Active Devon, Devon Community Foundation, Community Council of Devon, Primary Care Trust, private sector companies, the Marines, Police and local authorities.

The Vision for Devon’s Olympic legacy includes ambitions to:

   1. encourage a more welcoming and outward looking approach in Devon;
   2. promote more healthy life styles;
   3. engage more young people in positive activities;
   4. increase volunteering;
   5. stimulate a more enterprising and adventurous culture;
   6. explore the links between sport and culture.

In pursuing these objectives, sustainability principles and inter-generational activity will feature strongly.

Amongst the ideas being taken forward are:

Business:
“Fit for Profit”, to improve employees’ health and well being, thereby reducing absenteeism and increasing productivity;
local consortia to tender for contracts.

Tourism:
Events programme which appeals to broad based, outdoor participation eg the allotment Olympics, coast to coast relay events, inter parish traditional games, letter boxing, mountain biking on the moors.

Sport:
Development of Devon Youth Games, coach education programmes, investment in sports related businesses, creation of new and improved facilities for sports use and informal games, programme of events in schools.

Culture:
Devon Dances, ‘World Sites’ (a celebration of Devon’s three World Heritage Sites)

Community:
Encouragement of volunteering and related skills development, improved playing facilities.
